A LOVE LETTER TO MY NEXT CLIENT
Coaching is not part of mainstream mental healthcare YET… but I hope you will help me in changing that.
I imagine a future in which engaging in preventative mental healthcare and mental fitness are the norm.
That’s why I’m passionate about helping coaches help more people.
We need more people like YOU to legitimize the coaching industry and make these types of services available to more people who need them.
While it’s important to note that there are many highly skilled therapists out there and that there are matters that should be dealt with in therapy rather than coaching,
My experiences with therapy did not help me move the needle earlier in my life.
I think I had been looking for a therapist to “fix me” just like you might expect a doctor to “heal you”. Without realizing it, I was outsourcing my healing.
But when my case fell through the cracks after a failed suicide attempt at 18, I was forced to realize no one was coming to save me. My healing was up to me.
Coaching is how I learned to take responsibility for my life and for living it consciously and fully.
All of that mindset work over the past 10+ years is the reason I’ve become so resilient and damn near unstoppable when it comes to creating my life as I want to experience it.
I know how much coaching is needed in this world. I know because I’d probably be six feet under at this very moment if it weren’t for coaching.
I also know my story is not unique.
Let’s be real though, the coaching industry is very VERY misunderstood.
It seems like everyone and their mom is a coach these days.
It’s very easy to become a coach…… on paper.
In practice, that’s another story.
The coaches who are masters of their craft approach what they do with the incisiveness and seriousness of a brain surgeon.
They understand that coaching is NOT the same thing as “advice giving” and it takes YEARS of dedicated practice and application in your own life to become an expert at it.
Coaching is about helping people become AWARE of the impact of their thoughts on the way they feel, how they behave, and what they are (or are not) able to create for themselves.
Being a coach is one of the most gratifying jobs in the world.
It isn’t something you rush into to GET RICH. It’s something you get into to ENRICH your life and those of others, not to escape your own inner feelings of poverty.
Because transformation is not a transaction.
For those of us who believe in the power of this work, we do what we do because it changes lives and most importantly because it has changed our own.
So let me tell you the words that changed my life when I was getting started:
YOU CAN’T HEAL THE WORLD IF YOU DON’T HEAL YOURSELF FIRST.
Healed people heal people.
As coaches, we have a responsibility to do our own work.
So many coaches want to go from certified to changing the world and making millions overnight.
But to become the CEO of that kind of coaching business, you have to become the CEO of you first.
And even after all the work you’ve done, you have to keep being willing to ask for help.
“Self-made” is the myth marketing bros who take pictures in their rented/daddy’s lambo love to tell.
We need help from guides and a cast of side characters to show up as the main character when we’re on a mission to change lives by offering this work.
I know you’ve probably tried to make it on your own. I did the same thing.
And I got far, but I also went slow and I didn’t get myself where I wanted to go until I humbled myself and asked for help.
It took a lot to find the COURAGE to accept what I did not know and ask for help with it.
I don’t know if I’ll be one of the guides on your path, but I do know that the path you’re on is an important one.
One that I hope you keep on even when it gets difficult and your knees feel like they could buckle under the enormity of your doubts.
And if I can help make the road easier for you and lighten the load, it would be my honor to be your Sherpa and your coach.
